As we continued our Wild West Road Trip, we headed south from Mt. Rushmore to Custer State Park. We had heard it was a good way to see some bison up close if you were lucky. Turns out there were some other animals wanting the attention of the tourists….the wild donkeys. I had read about them before we left, but forgot about it, to be honest. I mean, I grew up on a farm in the south, so I have seen my share of donkeys. It was the bison I was interested in. But I have to say, the donkeys knew how to get attention!
He just stood in the middle of the road and stared at you as you drove by.

Some people were crazy enough to get out of the car and feed the donkeys. I don’t really think this is a good idea. They came right up to the window. That is close enough without putting yourself in danger. They are wild animals after all.
Even though my main goal was to see the bison, the donkeys did a good job of entertaining us as we drove through Custer State Park. I would suggest you take the “wildlife loop” through Custer State Park if you are in the area.
