Five states, over 3000 miles, 30 bags of corn nuts and 450 pictures later…we are done with the Wild West Road Trip! It was the first true road trip vacation we had ever taken as a family and it won’t be the last. We had a great time! Thought I would end things with a quick recap of the trip.
Day one: Iowa
We drove across the entire state from Davenport to Sioux City. Our biggest stop in Iowa was the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library.
Day Two, Three & Four: South Dakota
We stopped to stretch our legs at Sioux Falls Park. Then it was a LONG drive across the entire state, enjoying the scenes as we went. Many of our South Dakota stops were all on the western side, pretty close to one another. Those included…
The Badlands (including our unexpected trouble)
Day Five, Six, Seven & Eight: Wyoming
We covered the entire state of Wyoming, from the small tourist attractions to the big ones, we tried to fit it all in. This is what we managed to do in our four days…
Day Nine: Nebraska
We spent day nine traveling across the entire state of Nebraska. But I managed to find a few interesting things to do along the way. We enjoyed the museum at Fort Kearny called
The Great Platte River Road Archway.
We also made a quick stop in Omaha to see where our alma mater played in the college world series. This was a request by my husband, who is very nice about stopping at all of my interests, so we couldn’t pass this up. 🙂
Day Ten: HOME!
To tell you the truth, I could have easily stayed gone many more days. I love exploring new places and doing it with my family is like the icing on top. Vacations truly are my happy place. That’s why I don’t just have the travel bug…I have The {Happy} Travel Bug! 😉

I remember making a long day trip from Gillette, Wyoming to Mt Rushmore and back a few years ago. It was indeed a fabulous drive and as you have highlighted, so many great things to see.

Such a beautiful part of the country! I just LOVE mountains!

Sounds like a fantastic road trip – you certainly covered a lot of ground! My kids are a lot better at long plane rides than they are at long car rides – I don't think we would have survived that long in the car!
Sonja Hoyt The Happy Travel Bug
We did so much stopping along the way, it didn't really feel like we were in the car long until we started heading home. By then, they were pretty tired, so it all worked out great!

That's a lot of corn nuts, for sure! This sounds like a fabulous road trip.
Sonja Hoyt The Happy Travel Bug
It was fabulous! And those corn nuts were a lifesaver! LOL!

Loved reading about this trip! I especially like long road trips like this since we usually fall in to a pattern with each other after a while with less fighting and more having fun since the kids start to comprehend that our family is the only people they know around them and they better get along! 🙂

That's so true! Glad you liked reading about our trip!

When we head out west, I'm so gonna stalk this page! 🙂 My daughter and I just drove over 2000 miles on a trip to Florida and back, stopping at roadside attractions along the way. I've been home 2 days and already want to head out again. Talk about travel as your happy place….. 🙂

I'm so glad this page will be helpful to you…that is why I all this stuff!!!

I love road trips with my family. We love visiting the national parks too. I remember when I was a kid, we visited a spot in Nebraska called The Pioneer Museum. I've always wondered if it's still there. It was really cool, so much history. Thanks so much for linking up to Inspire Me Wednesday!
Sonja Hoyt The Happy Travel Bug
Beautiful scenery and great history is an awesome combo for me! I didn't see The Pioneer Museum, but that River Road Archway was an awesome history museum! You should do that next time you hit Nebraska.

I like the way you posted your trips; gotta remember that for my posts. It's always nice to hear when familys have fun together on roadtrips and plan to do it again. So little together time as a family is spent nowadays and it's such a memorable experience the oldfashioned roadtrips. Here from the Best of the USA hop & hope to see you at my dance soon. BB2U

Thanks for the thoughts. I totally agree.

I took my kids on a road trip from Michigan to Washington state last summer, and it was the best time. I can't wait to do it again! We didn't go through Nebraska at all, but we did spend some time in South Dakota, Wyoming, and Iowa. In Iowa we went to the Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge in Prairie City, IA & Devils Tower in Wyoming. I would love to explore more, but it was an awesome experience to see so much of our country.
Sonja Hoyt The Happy Travel Bug
Sounds like a fun trip. We were going to go to Devil's Tower, but our car problems in the Badlands made us miss it.

There are many ways of enjoying a road trip, but I prefer relying on Toronto camping vans for hire, whenever I plan a touring vacation with my family, as it is extremely convenient to take care of the kids, while moving from place to another.
